DIXFIELD — Bettina Martin, chairwoman of the Board of Selectmen, died at her Sugarloaf Avenue home Sunday following a battle with cancer with several family members at her side.

She has served on the board since 2006, with most of those years as chariwoman.

She had also served on the River Valley Growth Council and was a past member of the town’s economic development council, among other organizations.

Prior to moving to Dixfield, she was the town of Farmington’s longtime financial officer.

She was the mother of five adult children. Several live in the Dixfield area.

Dixfield Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky said the board will decide what steps to take at Monday’s 5 p.m. selectmen’s meeting. Vice-Chairman Steve Donahue has led the past few board meetings.

Martin’s term was due to expire in June 2011.

She was raised by her parents who operated a grocery store in the village of Dryden in Wilton, and graduated from Wilton Academy.
