LEWISTON — The Lewiston High School swim team is launching a six-week instructional swim clinic beginning Saturday, Jan. 15 at the YWCA on East Ave. The clinic is for students in grades 7 and 8 who attend Lewiston Middle School.

The Saturday swim program is offered from 1 to 2 p.m. at no cost to students. Focus is on fun, competitive swim basics and with an emphasis on team building. The program will be led by coach Tom Stocker and assistant Jennifer Dube-Works along with junior coaches Alex Small and Camille Dionne. Small and Dionne are advanced swimmers on the LHS Swim Team and are excited to work with the middle school youth to build desire to participate in school sports and ‘wet’ their appetite for swim team.

For more information, contact Stocker at [email protected] or 740-1053 or go to www.lhsswimteam.com. Students will need a bathing suit, goggles, towel and a desire to learn the basics of competitive swimming.

Boardercross event moves to Sugarloaf

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The sixth-annual Tucker’s Boardercross for Cancer is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15 and Sunday, Jan. 16 at Sugarloaf Mountain.

After five years of holding the Boardercross at Sunday River, event organizers have moved the competition. Aside from supporting the mountain where namesake Tucker Olmsted honed his skills, the hope is to introduce the cause to a brand new audience and expand the event.

Practice runs begin at 8:30 a.m. each day, with races starting around 10:30 a.m. There will be a booth set up at the counter in the Maple Room in the base lodge for information, buying t-shirts and sweatshirts, purchasing raffle tickets and making bids on silent auction items.

The event is held in memory of Olmsted, a competitive snowboarder from Yarmouth who represented Maine in the 2003 National Championships at Sunday River. Less than two years later, he lost a fierce battle with lymphoma at age 14.

For the last five years, a Boardercross race and fundraiser in Olmsted’s memory has been organized, with 100 percent of the proceeds dedicated to the advancement of cancer treatment by The Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
