50 years ago, 1961
Naming of Auburn’s new high school reached a new high yesterday with two meetings held last night at which time action was taken.
One group of 14 persons decided that Auburn should, if it wants publicity only, name the new school the John Fitzgerald Kennedy High School.
This would mean that probably Auburn would be the first community in the country to name a school for the new president and this would probably get national publicity. James Albiston said the movement for the Kennedy name originated in Ward Three and was being pushed.
25 years ago, 1986
NAPLES — A high school’s students are “infuriated” because the school board has canceled soap operas from a list of acceptable study hall activities for privileged students, the principal said.
“The kids are not very happy,” said Lake Region High School Principal Richard Sykes.
Sykes said the board apparently felt that a large number of students whose marks, effort and behavior had won them special privileges during study hall time were doing nothing but tuning in to the television serials.
