It was announced yesterday by the management of the Empire Theatre of Lewiston that beginning on Jan. 30 the Empire will become a vaudeville and moving picture house with the one night special attractions put in as they come from time to time. Several of these big attractions are already booked for the present season. It is proposed to introduce some of the highest priced vaudeville bills ever shown east of Boston.
50 years ago, 1961
Lewiston police yesterday reminded residents it is unlawful to deposit snow in streets and sidewalks.
The LPD pointed out that city ordinance regulations make it unlawful “for any person to remove snow from private premises and deposit same in and upon any street or sidewalk.” The definition of “person” in the ordinance “shall mean and include individuals, firms and corporations.”
25 years ago, 1986
Women will be trained to drive trucks in a first-of-its-kind course being offered at Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Auburn.
Vaikko Allen, CMVTI’s dean of continuing education, said the course is being coordinated by the school, Maine Department of Transportation, Mountain Valley Training, Women’s Construction Trade Center and the Welfare, Education, Employment and Training program.
The goal is to train women for class 2 licenses, which will qualify them to drive such vehicles as dump, delivery and oil trucks.
