LEICESTER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont’s largest electric utility says the power is back on to about 2,400 customers in the Leicester area on the coldest winter morning in the last two years.

Some of the cold spots in northern New England in the overnight hours included minus-33 in Victory, 32 below in Whitefield, N.H. and 28 below in Fryeburg, Maine. Greenville, Maine recorded a wind chill reading of 46 below zero.

Meanwhile, dozens of schools in Vermont and New Hampshire have closed their doors or are having delayed openings to protect students from temperatures that dropped in some locations as low as 25 degrees below zero or even colder.

The wind chill in some areas is expected to make it feel as cold as 50 degrees below zero.
