100 years ago,1911

SABATTUS — The question was asked here today — what Sabattus would do when they had a fire — and was promptly answered by a long-time resident of the town, who said, “We are not going to have any fires.” And it would seem that Sabattus is to be exempted from the ravages of the flames. For 14 years, there has not been a fire of any consequence in that village, that one being the destruction of the Jordan house on Main Street, the night before Christmas in 1897. There have been many chimney fires and roof fires, but none that did other than nominal damage.

50 years ago, 1961

St. Johnsbury Trucking Co., which maintains 24 terminals in 10 states, including a modern plant in Auburn, has announced the purchase of Pyramid Motor Freight Corp., thereby giving New England shippers a through service covering Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Organized in 1921, St. Johnsbury employs 1,000 personnel. It pioneered regrigerated service in New England and now operates some 75 pieces of temperature-controlled equipment.

25 years ago, 1986

Neil Minkoff, son of Nancy and Eli Minkoff of Lewiston, has been named as a runner-up in the Century III Leaders scholarship program. Minkoff is one of two Maine students to be named runners-up.

Century III Leaders is a national program for high school seniors and is designed to recognize and develop leadership skills. It is administered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
