100 years ago,1911
Becoming frightened on Park Street early last evening while the mail carrier was out of the sleigh, the horse of one of the local mailmen started up the street on the run and turned in at the post office. Another mail carrier’s team was there and the horse, frightened at the other runaway, started in another direction, going up Ash Street.
Mail was thrown along the streets and one of the sleighs was badly smashed. No one was injured and the mail was quickly picked up, none the worse for the incident.
50 years ago, 1961
Coronation of the Lewiston High School Winter Carnival queen attracted a large crowd of students and adults to the school auditorium Saturday evening. Miss Suzanne Fournier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Fournier of Rideout Ave., Lewiston, was winner of the queen contest and crowned by Principal Linwood J. Kelley. Miss Fournier, a pretty brunette, is a member of the senior class.
25 years ago, 1986
Lewiston Raceway is gearing up for its earliest opener in five years. Unlike prior years, there have been no major capital improvements, but the racing surface survived the winter and the supply of horses looks strong. The racing surface has been clear all winter, with dozens of horses in training.
Lewiston Raceway opens Saturday evening, the first Saturday opener ever at that track. Last year, it opened gangbusters on a Sunday afternoon with fans wagering more than $200,000.
