DURHAM — Loss was set at $100,000 in a barn fire here Thursday afternoon that left approximately 139 head of cattle dead, Fire Chief Donald Brown said.
The building was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived at the scene. One of five large metal covered barns, it housed 150 dairy cows. Fifteen cows were taken out,and three later died from injuries, and it is expected others will have to be destroyed, Brown said.
The building was owned by Franklin Hunnewell of Durham, and the cattle were owned by his father-in-law, Auburn dairy farmer Kenneth Bowie.
