In an apparent attempt to eliminate overdrafts in the city’s school department budget, the Auburn City Council last night adopted a motion requiring the Superintending School Committee to make all purchases through City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett and further decided that any purchase which will cause an overdraft is not to be approved.
The council adopted the motion after hearing a legal opinion from city solicitor Israel Alpren in which the attorney said the school committee had no authority to set its own budget.

MECHANIC FALLS — Three boys were coached to safety after falling through ice on the Little Androscoggin River here Thursday afternoon, police said.
Christine Ulrickson, who happened to be passing by and saw the three fall through the ice, was credited by Mechanic Falls police with saving the boys. The boys — Jeff and Richard Mitchell, ages 7 and 9, respectively, and Chuck Mason, 4 — were not injured.
“They did awfully well,” said Mrs. Ulrickson. “They were obviously terrified … but when I talked to them, they did what I said.”
