SABATTUS — Two people were at area hospitals and one man was in custody Sunday following a standoff with authorities.

Leein Hinkley, 30, was taken into custody by authorities shortly before 7 p.m. following a standoff at his parent’s home, Sourground Farm on Williams Road in Sabattus.

Hinkley made his initial appearance in Lewiston’s 8th District Court Monday, charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. Hinkley is a convicted felon, according to police, with a criminal history that dates back to 2001, including two convictions for assault and one for violating a protection from abuse order and burglary in 2008.

Lisbon Police Sgt. Harry Moore said Sunday night that Hinkley fled to his parents’ home in Sabattus after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend and a good Samaritan who tried to come to her aid on King Road in Lisbon at about 4:45 p.m.

According to Moore, Hinkley and his girlfriend were fighting in the car on King Road when he stabbed her. A homeowner on King Road saw the altercation going on and ran outside to help the woman, only to be stabbed himself. Moore said that Hinkley then got back in the woman’s car and fled the scene.

During the attack, according to police, there was a 13-month-old child in the car.

Hinkley barricaded himself inside the Williams Road home with a firearm for more than an hour while tactical teams mobilized outside.

Sabattus Police Lt. Matt Prince said calls came in to his agency about 5:15 p.m. that Hinkley was armed at his family’s farm.

Prince said that more than a dozen law enforcement officers from Sabattus and Lisbon and Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties, as well as Maine State Police and Maine Game Wardens responded to the scene.

Hinkley was taken into custody about 6:45 p.m. Sunday.

He was held overnight at the Androscoggin County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.
