Second verse, same as the first for the Lewiston Maineiacs in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Only this time, it was better.

Forced into overtime for the second consecutive night against the PEI Rocket, the Maineiacs received timely goal-scoring from an unlikely source at an opportune time and came away from a three-games-in-three nights road trip with five of a possible six points.

Zach Shannon netted his second goal of the season with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Maineiacs to a 4-3 victory over the Rocket in front of 2,127 at the Charlottetown Civic Centre on Saturday.

“It was a nice goal, a great setup from (Kirill) Kabanov to get it to him and a nice shot,” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. It was nice to get the point last night because we needed it, but it was great to get the win this time.”

Lewiston was in danger of falling into a race for the final home-ice playoff position in the Quebec major Junior Hockey League before this week’s action began. Now, with points in four consecutive games — six of eight possible in all — Lewiston, with four games remaining, has clinched home ice in the first round and currently sits in seventh place, four points back of Gatineau for sixth with two games against the Olympiques on the home schedule next weekend.

“It’s important to finish as high as you can, and the team seems to be coming out of the funk a little bit,” Houle said.

The Maineiacs fired out of the gate Saturday.

Antoine Houde-Caron’s 16th of the campaign got things started for Lewiston 8:03 into the contest when he finished a rush with Sam Henley.

Etienne Brodeur inched closer to the 50-goal plateau with his 49th on a picture-perfect power play setup from Kirill Kabanov about four minutes later to double his team’s advantage, and Alex Zafiris got a stick on an Olivier Dame-Malka blast at 15:14 to push the advantage to 3-0.

“When you play three-in-three, you want a good quick start, but you want to keep it simple,” Houle said. “I thought we did that in the first.”

In the second, the Rocket got two back when Olivier Croteau beat Makarov on a second-chance opportunity in tight, and Andrej Nestrasil added his 18th. Despite the goal, the Maineiacs maintained a one-goal advantage into the second intermission.

In the third, though, Ben Duffy again showed a flair for the dramatic, netting his 33rd of the season to even things up with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, essentially equaling Kabanov’s feat from the previous night.

That set up Shannon’s OT tally, which sent the Maineiacs to victory.

The Maineiacs host Gatineau for a pair Friday and Sunday, and finish the season on the road with games in Baie-Comeau and Chicoutimi the following weekend.
