DURHAM, N.H. — Melissa Paione of Edward Little High School broke free from the pack and won the 100-yard breaststroke at the New England swim championships with a national-qualifying time.

The EL junior won the race in 1 minute, 9.19 seconds, nearly a half second faster than her seed time.

The time qualifies Paione for the Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., later this year.

Paione also placed fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.41, which was also faster than her seed time. She also competed in a pair of relays with Sam Goulette, Rachel Gagne and Gabby Lapierre. The medley relay placed 11th (2:08.49) and the 400 freestyle relay took ninth.

Goulette finished 10th in the 200 individual medley.

St. Dom’s swimmer Ciara Ferguson won a bronze medal when she placed third in the 500 freestyle in 5:43.25.
