100 years ago,1911

Yesterday the Darling Auto Co. received a Reo Auto Truck, the first one to be brought here. It was at once put into operation and certainly was a pronounced success. The machine will be used by the Darling Co. for demonstration purposes and for its own trucking. It will take a load up to 2,500 pounds and can be operated by any man who is sufficiently competent to handle an ordinary team.

50 years ago, 1961

More than 47 of the seventh- and eighth-grade students at Jordan School will visit the Maine Legislature and tour the State House today.

The students will be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs Martin Weisse, Mrs. Morris Zack, Mrs. Harold Shackleton and Mrs. Edward Woodhead, all parents of students, and Thomas Tanous, a history teacher.

Arrangements for the trip were made by Mrs. Woodhead, Tanous, Jordan Principal Joseph F. Mahan and Mayor Emile Jacques.

25 years ago, 1986

In the first five and a half months since Center Street in Auburn was reconstructed as Maine’s first five-lane road, accidents on the street have declined drastically from the same period last year, according to Auburn police records.

If the trend continues, it will mark a reversal of the constant increase in accidents on Center Street, which is one of the state’s most heavily traveled stretches of road.
