Capt. Rivers of East Auburn, who has seen the ice go out of Lake Auburn for many years and whose predictions are generally correct, says that the ice will not leave the lake this year until the first of May. Although the rain of the last two days will help to rot the ice, it is very thick and it will take much warm weather and rain to melt it.
50 years ago, 1961
Flashes of light in the sky were seen throughout the Twin Cities last night and were blamed on an unseasonable but brief electrical storm.
The flashes, apparently lightning, started about 10:15 and lasted until about 10:30. The UWP Co. gatehouse reported a brief shower in the vicinity of Gulf Island Dam. Police and The Sun office received several calls from persons who had observed the flashes of light in the overcast sky.

That trait might cause problems in some circles, but it has helped Hurricane Hattie make a living for 25 years.
“I always feel like I’m coming home when I come to Maine,” says the Sabattus native, who is now playing what has become an annual engagement at Happy Jack’s restaurant in Lewiston.
Born Dolores Dargie on a farm in Sabattus, “Hattie” was one of eight children. Her routine is sprinkled with references to life on the farm, her family and the small town in Maine where she grew up and where many of her family and friends still live.
