NEWRY — Sunday River announced Thursday that the resort’s last day of operation for this season is Sunday, April 24, weather permitting.
That date will mark six months of skiing at the Maine resort, which was the first ski hill in the U.S. to open for the season on Oct. 24, 2010.
It is the second season in a row the resort will have remained open for six months of skiing and riding, according to a release issued Thursday.
Snow expected from Friday’s storm will give the resort enough cover to stay open until late April, the release stated. Sunday River also had more than 100 days of snowmaking.
Cold weather and natural snow combined to put the ski area in good shape for the spring, Dana Bullen, the resort’s president said.
“We’re just as passionate about snow as our guests are,” Bullen said in a prepared statement, “and given how fortunate we’ve been with snowfall and snowmaking weather this season, we absolutely want to stay open through late April.”
Ethan Austin, the spokesman for Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley, said that resort was hoping to stay open seven days a week until May 1 and snow and weather permitting weekends until May 15.
