All high school athletes would love to draw the same conclusion about their senior year that James Jackson did about his.
“I don’t think I could have had a better season,” Jackson said. “Everything I wanted to accomplish, I did.”
The racer known as “J.J.” has been one of the anchors of a strong Edward Little High School boys’ alpine team throughout his career.
In terms of saving the best for last, though, it would be hard for anyone to top this.
Jackson swept the slalom and giant slalom at both the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Class A state meets.
For an encore, he took home the bronze medal in the slalom showcase at the New England High School Championships in Franconia, N.H.
“Those were all of my goals at the beginning of the year,” Jackson said.
It all adds up to one final reward for Jackson: He is the Sun Journal all-region boys’ alpine skier of the year.
Alex Rose and Cody Jacques of Livermore Falls, each an individual state champion in Class C, also merited consideration.
But as a model of consistency against the strongest available competition, Jackson stood alone on the tri-county slopes.
“I just didn’t have that many bad races that I can remember,” Jackson said. “I definitely have to thank Coach (Tara) Eretzian. She believed in me the whole time. She never allowed me to get any doubt in my mind.”
Jackson set the tone for his finishing flourish in two previous stellar seasons.
As a sophomore, he finished third in the Class A slalom and shared in the Red Eddies’ alpine team championship.
After winning the KVAC giant slalom his junior season, Jackson snagged second in the same event at states. He also clocked the fastest second-round time in the slalom after a fall on his opening run.
“Last year was a really good year. Senior year I had a little more sense of urgency to make it my best,” Jackson said.
Jackson noted that he has been around the sport “pretty much forever.” Family members tell stories of him standing up on skis without assistance at Sugarloaf when he was 18 months old.
By second and third grade, he was racing at Lost Valley.
He may be done competing for now, at least under the scholastic banner.
“Next year wherever I go to school I want to major in pharmacy,” Jackson said. “I don’t think I’ll be skiing in college, but I’ll definitely continue on my own.”
