100 years ago,1911

Announcement is made that the seventeenth annual Poland Spring exhibition of paintings will be opened in the Maine State Building on June 8, to continue until October. Mssrs. Hiram Ricker & Sons will purchase from the exhibition of 1911 one or more works for the permanent collection.

50 years ago, 1961

Lewiston police yesterday busted up a small fry larceny operation that netted two 14-year-old girls about $100 over the past several weeks.

Detective Capt. Ralph E. Fraser said the girls visited department stores and ladies shops, removing women’s handbags from fitting rooms. The girls have admitted to  a half dozen such thefts so far, he reported.

 Fraser said some handbags were left at the scene after being emptied of cash, others were mailed back to the owners and a few were left in a nearby restaurant.

25 years ago, 1986

The Maine Music Awards ceremony will be held Sunday at the Ramada Inn, Lewiston. The group Cornerstone is among those nominated for the honor of Best Group. Other categories include best new group, best soloist, best male and female vocalists, best single song, album and songwriter and best radio station, awarded to WBLM in three of the past four years.
