100 years ago,1911

The Neal Institute, which has gained a marvelous record for curing the drink habit in three days, and for all time, has established an institute in Auburn at 416 Turner St.

This grand work of freeing victims from the bondage of desire, craving and appetite for drink began in Iowa years ago and the parent institute is in Des Moines. Auburn is only one of 60 odd cities and towns where the Neal Institute has taken its field in the cause of happier homes, normal appetites and steadier nerves regained.

50 years ago, 1961

The Twin Cities will have a Patriot’s Day parade this morning complete with musical units, safety projects, new automobiles and trucks and State Police. The entire line of march will be led by Lewiston and Auburn police.

The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. from Auburn Motor Sales Inc. on Center Street. Featured in the parade will be the Scarlet Cadets, portions of the Edward Little High School and Jordan School bands, garage wreckers towing wrecked automobiles, State Police safety vehicles and a group of Auburn PAL boys in uniform. The parade is sponsored by the Lewiston and Auburn Auto Dealers Association.

Bowdoin College’s Tom Welch drove in five runs and pitcher Joe Kelly came on in relief to shut down Bates on two hits over the final three-and-a-third innings to lead the Polar Bears to an 8-7 victory over the Bobcats in a CBB conference baseball game Friday.
