BUCKFIELD — Police late Wednesday were investigating the death of a man who died of an apparent gunshot wound at a home on Darnit Road.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department was called to the home at about 9 p.m. where a man was said to be down after a shot was fired.

Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies who first arrived called for help from Maine State Police. Later Wednesday night, detectives from that agency were joined by an official from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant.

Police did not identify the victim. It was believed the man was inside the home with his wife when the shot was fired. It was unclear how many others, if any, were there at the time.

The investigation was expected to continue into Thursday.
