A bill that also makes the blueberry pie Maine’s official dessert became law on Wednesday. The bill, which drew widespread attention along with criticism, became law without Gov. Paul LePage’s signature. It’ll take effect 90 days after the close of this year’s session.

The original bill to make whoopies the official state dessert was amended to bestow that honor on blueberry pie made with wild Maine blueberries. It made whoopies the state treat instead.

The bill surfaced as Maine and Pennsylvania each claim credit as the true home of the chocolate cakes stuffed with creamy white frosting.

The bill has generated criticism from some who say the Legislature should concern itself with more serious issues.
