LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library is looking for volunteers to assist on Language Learning Nights in the library’s computer lab. Volunteers are needed to work one evening each week from 5:30 to 7 p.m. assisting library patrons in using the Rosetta Stone Language program.

Rosetta Stone language learning at LPL is offered in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Italian. Language Learning Nights have been most heavily used by members of the New Mainer community who are working on developing their English skills.

Rosetta Stone is an award-winning program that provides an immersion-like, interactive learning experience. The software is easy to use and once a learner is set up with an account, the learning takes place in a self-paced, self-directed environment.

Potential volunteers need to be comfortable using computers with the Microsoft Windows operating software. No special language or teaching credentials are required. New volunteers will be trained to use the Rosetta Stone program and to assist new learners in getting started with the program.

The language learning software is only available on computers in the LPL computer lab, either during the Downtown Education Collaborative’s digital divide lab sessions (Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.); or during language learning nights (currently Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30 to 7 p.m.). However, with the assistance of new volunteers, the library is hoping to expand the number of evenings open.

For more information on this volunteer opportunity or Rosetta Stone software, contact the LPL reference desk at 513-3135 or email them at [email protected].
