Auburn has a new industry located on Goff Hill. It is the chicken industry at the Carles Cushman place. Although this industry has been in progress for some time,  it is now being enlarged and bettered. This, too, is the best time to visit the place for it is now that the chickens are creeping from their eggs daily in large numbers. When visited by the Sun recently, there were over 3,700 chickens between the ages of one day and five weeks and a flock of over 1,000 full-grown hens.

Despite warnings from the public works director and other officials, the Lewiston City Council failed to garner enough affirmative votes Tuesday to appropriate $60,000 toward extending the city’s near-capacity landfill.

Acting Public Works Director Christopher C. Branch cautioned councilors that if $60,000 were not appropriated immediately, the annual cost of disposing of Lewiston’s 33,000 tons of trash would skyrocket from roughly $300,000 to $1.2 million.

Because rules governing the council require at least six affirmative votes for approprations made after adoption of the city budget in March, the 5-2 vote was not enough to pass the motion.
