AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Opponents of a newly enacted law that ends Maine’s Election Day voter registration policy will outline the reasons they are challenging the law.
Opponents plan a news conference Thursday at the State House. They filed a challenge Tuesday with the secretary of state’s office seeking a people’s veto vote on whether to repeal the law.
League of Women Voters of Maine President Barbara McDade says same-day voter registration has been part of Maine elections for 38 years and helped almost 70,000 people participate during the last two general elections. McDade and other members of a people’s veto coalition plan to speak Thursday.
Supporters of the law say same-day registration overburdens municipal clerks with paperwork as elections are being held.
