A rusty handgun found on the Bates College campus last week appears to have been buried for several years, according to Lewiston police.

The handgun, which was found at the construction site of the college’s new performing arts center near Russell Street, was turned over to police last Monday by Bates Security Chief Stanley Piawlock, after being found a day or two earlier.

Police said Monday that the gun would be sent to the Maine State Police laboratory to see if it could be determined how long it had been buried.
