100 years ago, 1911

In the presence of a crowd that filled the spacious hall to its capacity, the graduating exercises of the class of 1911 of Frye Grammar School were successfully carried out Thursday afternoon at the Dingley Training School.

Of particular interest was the valedictory, given by Miss Alida Herling. She is a native of Russia and up to a few years ago could not speak a word of English. So faithfully and understandingly has she studied that since entering school in Auburn and Lewiston, she has skipped two grades.

50 years ago, 1961

Dr. J. Paul Nadeau of 91 Pine St., Lewiston, is one of two men renominated yesterday as members of the Maine Board of Registration of Medicine by Gov. John H. Reed. Nadeau was first named to the board by then-Gov. Clinton Clauson in August of 1959, succeeding Dr. Alcid F. DuMais, formerly of Lewiston.

The other man named to the board is Dr. Martin A. Vickers of Bangor.

25 years ago, 1986

LISBON — The Board of Selectmen turned out early Sunday morning to welcome Lisbon’s newest business, Future Foods Supermarket, in the Midtown Shopping Center in Lisbon Falls. Chairman David Bowie presented Warren Sawyer, president of the firm, an official welcome to Lisbon on behalf of the board and the town.

Hundreds of people jammed the new supermarket for its grand opening, packing their shopping carts, saying they were glad to see a supermarket with full shelves here again.
