DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m back again, the person with the six kittens at the end of O’Connell Street in Lewiston. I received a lot of help from Jerry and Melanie Bolduc from the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society and Alley Cat Allies. They trapped the kittens, spayed and neutered them, thanks to Dr. Kinney!
Yesterday I noticed four new little kittens, plus an opposum and a raccoon and two big cats. I don’t know how long I can feed them. Another couple, a nice man and woman, brought me some cat food. Thank you very much for what you do. — Richard V., Lewiston, 783-3632
ANSWER: Sun Spots is glad you found someone to help you. The local rescue groups are tremendously dedicated and do an amazing job with limited resources.
Meanwhile, the problem of proliferating felines continues. Sun Spots encourages everyone to neuter their pets. Help is available.
Sun Spots used the Cleo fund (www.animalwelfaresociety.org, 773-6221) to spay a stray female cat for $40.
Help Fix ME, financed by pet food registration fees, is at http://tinyurl.com/d659b6, 1-800-367-1317 or 287-7621. According to the website, if you receive or are eligible for food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability or Maine Care (Medicaid), you can have your cat fixed for $10, and your dog fixed for $20.
There may also be help from local rescue groups (for example, River Valley Animal Advocates , Becky McDonald, [email protected]) or your humane society. Your veterinarian may also have suggestions.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Alley Cats L/A works with the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. Our mission is to identify those people who are feeding outdoor stray and/or feral cats. We provide trapping services, neuter the cats and return them to their caretakers. We also identify those cats that are truly pets to get them off the streets and into real homes. Young kittens if caught at the right age can be “tamed” and become great pets.
We need volunteers! From trapping cats, transporting them to the vet, fostering or helping with our second annual yard sale on Aug. 13. We need donations of stuff to sell! For more information or pickup or drop-off, please call me at 784-1553 or GAHS 783-2311. Thanks so much. — Melanie Bolduc, [email protected]
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Meadowview Senior Complex is organizing two summer day trips. On Saturday July 9, we’re going to Foster’s Clam Bake in Wells. The meal includes lobster or chicken plus everything that goes with a clam bake. We’ll go by bus, with stops at Reny’s new department store in Portland and Lenny’s chocolate store, where you will see a full-size moose made out of chocolate.
On Monday Aug. 15, we’re going to Cabbage Island, with a stop on the way at Big Al’s in Wiscasset, then on to Boothbay Harbor. There will be time for some shopping, then we’ll take the sightseeing boat, stopping at Cabbage Island for a meal of two lobster or chicken with chowder, clams, potato, corn on the cob, etc., before returning by boat back to the harbor.
I’ll be escorting. For more information, please call me. Two other day trips for the fall are being planned. Thank you. — Bert Dutil, 786-2305, [email protected]
ANSWER: Sun Spots wonders why the main dishes at a clam bake are chicken and lobster?
