BANGOR, Maine (AP) — The largest hunting and fishing advocacy group in Maine is getting a new executive director.

State Sen. David Trahan, of Waldoboro, received unanimous support Thursday from the board of directors of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.

Trahan told the Bangor Daily News he will likely give up his Senate seat and begin the job in September. As the head of the 14,000-member organization, Trahan said he would focus on encouraging investment in the state’s fish hatcheries, restoring the deer herd and encouraging young people to get involved in hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities.

He will replace Matthew Dunlap, who has been serving as interim executive director since January but did not want the job on a permanent basis.
