100 years ago, 1911

Three people were injured, two of them severely, a wagon was demolished and a valuable horse killed late Saturday evening, when the outgoing train on the Lower Maine Central railroad struck a team at Cedar Street. No blame is attached to anyone in the matter, the accident being attributed to the blind crossing at this place. This is only one of a long list of accidents that have happened at Cedar and Chestnut streets, where there are dangerous crossings.

50 years ago, 1961

A colorful firemen’s muster will be held at the Lewiston Fairgrounds during the city’s centennial celebration program in September with about 20 “hand-tub” teams competing for honors, it was reported last night.

Lewiston Fire Pvt. Richard F. X. Cardwell Jr., muster chairman, said a chicken barbecue will be on the same program.

A parade from city park to the fairgrounds will get under way at 10 in the morning, and the muster will begin at 1 p.m. It is expected to last four to five hours.

25 years ago, 1986

Lewiston residents will decide in a November referendum whether to elect its school board representatives, thereby amending the city’s charter, a mayor’s committee concluded Tuesday.

A seven-member charter study committee, including Mayor Alfred A. Plourde, decided unanimously to draft a proposal that calls for the election, rather than the appointment, of an entirely new School Committee by January 1988.
