100 years ago, 1911
Ralph Martineau, who is spending several weeks at Lake Sabattus, set a record at the lake last week in fishing. He captured the largest eel ever taken at that lake. The eel which was white weighed 6 pounds, was 42 inches in length and measured 5 1/2 inches around the body.
Ralph is believed to be the boy champion eel catcher in Maine.
50 years ago, 1961
Lewiston’s oldest auto-washing concern will move to new quarters in about two weeks, it was learned yesterday.
The move was confirmed by Paul A. Begin, proprietor of Begin’s Auto Salon at 583 Main St.
He said he will move the business to the site of the former Shell service station at Sabattus and Howe streets. He said the new location for his business will sport new facilities for the car-washing trade. He noted that he started the first car-washing business in the Textile City some 12 years ago.
25 years ago, 1986
RUMFORD — A unification parade Thursday organized by Local 900 of the United Paperworkers International Union marked the 17th day of a strike against Boise Cascade’s Rumford mill.
About 750 strikers and their family members participated. The march drew a number of onlookers.
The parade began at the Rumford American Legion Post parking lot, located at one end of Congress Street, stretching the entire length of the street.
