PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Citing tension between state and federal laws governing medical marijuana use, a Maine lawmaker has resigned from the board of the state’s biggest medicinal pot non-profit organization.

State Rep. Mark Dion, D-Portland, resigned June 8 from the board of Northeast Patients Group, which has licenses to run medical marijuana dispensaries but has yet to open any.

Marijuana is illegal under federal law, but 16 states and the District of Columbia have laws making it legal.

Dion, a lawyer and former Cumberland County Sheriff, tells the Portland Press Herald that some patients want dispensaries but others would rather grow their own or get it from trusted caregivers.
