BANGOR, Maine — The man killed Wednesday when he was crushed by a backhoe near 820 Odlin Road while working on a natural gas line project was identified Thursday as Danny A. Dodge, 23, of the Waldo County town of Jackson.

The company he was working for at the time of the incident is Bowdoin Excavation of North Yarmouth, Bangor police said.

Detective Erik Tall of the Bangor Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is working with local officials of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine the exact cause of the accident, police said.

A spokesman for OSHA said Thursday that Bowdoin Excavation had no previous workplace safety violations with the agency.

The accident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday near the Hermon town line.

Police and others at the scene declined to say whether Dodge was operating the backhoe or if he was near it when it rolled onto him. The backhoe apparently rolled down a short embankment from a section of shoulder that recently had been dug up. It came to rest on its side.

The accident occurred at the site of a line extension project for Bangor Gas.

A spokeswoman from OSHA’s Augusta office said that its investigator’s findings will not be released until after the investigation is completed.
