NEWPORT — More than 200 people attended the funeral for a 19-year-old soldier from Maine who was killed in Afghanistan.
Services for Army Pfc. Tyler Springmann were held Friday at Nokomis Regional High in Newport, where he graduated last year. Burial, with military honors, was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.
Springmann died July 17 in Kandahar in a roadside blast that also claimed another soldier’s life and injured seven others. He served in the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
Gov. Paul LePage, who directed that U.S. and Maine flags be flown at half-staff in Springmann’s honor, was among those attending Friday’s services.
