CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party says House Speaker Bill O’Brien is a hypocrite when it comes to college student voting.
Ray Buckley was responding Thursday to a Sun Journal report that O’Brien’s son, Brendan, registered to vote and ran for office in Lewiston, Maine, while attending Bates College. Yet Speaker O’Brien, who did not return a phone call seeking comment, supported a failed effort this year to ban out-of-state college students from voting in New Hampshire.
The Sun Journal also said Brendan O’Brien registered in his home town of Mont Vernon last fall so he could vote for his father, but still is listed on Lewiston’s checklist. The state attorney general’s office is looking into whether Mont Vernon election officials failed to notify Maine when he registered there.
