POLAND — The RSU 16 School Committee reached agreement Monday on a compromise budget that it will take to voters in September.
Going into Monday’s meeting, the overall budget of $17,872,765 would have required property tax payers to come up with $250,000 more than a year ago.
In May, voters had soundly rejected the budget when it stood at $18.1 million and again in June when it had been lowered to $17.8 million.
While the committee wasn’t able to completely erase the $250,000 increase that was in the budget rejected in June, it was able to cut it in half.
This was achieved by taking an additional $100,000 from the district’s fund balance and directing school officials to find another $25,000 in the regular budget.
The new budget stands at $17,847,765 and if it passes, school officials estimate the effect on property taxes would be as follows: in Mechanic Falls, for a property valued at $100,000, property taxes would go down by 34 cents; in Minot, property taxes on a similar house would go up by $34.94; and in Poland property taxes would go up $9.49.
The proposed budget will be taken to a district meeting Sept. 7, and a validation vote held Sept. 13 on the amount approved Sept. 7.
The final vote to set the budget at $17,847,765 received near unanimous approval. Steve Holbrook cast the dissenting vote.
Holbrook had earlier made a motion to cut $125,000 from the budget by eliminating money for raises in teachers’ salaries.
