CARRYING PLACE TOWNSHIP — The body of a New York man was recovered Friday afternoon from a section of the Appalachian Trail in Somerset County.

Early indications were that the man, who was not identified, fell and struck his head while hiking a mile up the trail from the Long Falls Dam Road, said Edie Smith, spokeswoman for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

A group of hikers discovered the injured man. Attempts to revive him with CPR failed, Smith said.

The body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Maine State Police are investigating the death with the help of the Maine Warden Service.

Wardens also helped recover a body from Sally Mountain in Jackman after a man suffered a heart attack and died while hiking with his wife.

Smith said the man was a 63-year-old from Wisconsin, but his identity was not being released Friday night.

During the search on Sally Mountain, the Maine Warden Service was brought in along with LifeFlight and a helicopter from the Department of Conservation’s Maine Forest Service.

Due to the extreme denseness of the forest and the location of the body, which was near the top of Sally Mountain, the man was brought down with the aid of seven game wardens, the Jackman Fire Department and Border Patrol.
