TOWNSHIP 6 NORTH OF WELD — Missing hikers on Tumbledown mountain were located by Maine wardens after a short search late Tuesday night.
Tumbledown is in Franklin County.
In radio traffic between Warden Brock Clukey and a Maine State Police dispatcher in Gray, Clukey said the hikers were located on the Parker Ridge Trail by 11 p.m. and were being brought out to their vehicles.
After confirming with a dispatcher that the hikers, who called for help, indicated they believed they were on the Parker Ridge Trail, a warden headed up the trail at 10:39 p.m. on a four-wheeler.
Wardens were told initially they were looking for lost mountain bikers, not hikers.
It was not known how many hikers were lost or if any were injured.
