With the approach of Hurricane Irene, some organizations are postponing or cancelling weekend events. Below is a list of notices, which will be updated as they are received:
AUBURN — The L-A Bridge Run, scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, has been postponed to Saturday, Sept. 10.
AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Conservation is closing all coastal state parks, including Reid State Park in Georgetown, and several inland parks for day use on Sunday, Aug. 28, in anticipation of Hurricane Irene’s arrival in the state. In all, 27 parks will be closed; park rangers and conservation geologists will be on duty. According to a conservation spokesperson, “as MDOC parks, forestry and geology staff prepare for the storm, Maine residents and visitors are strongly warned to stay away from coastal areas for their own safety and to take precautions for themselves and their families.”
BANGOR — American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront events scheduled for Sunday have been canceled because of the impending storm. Performances will be added to Saturday’s schedule to make sure all artists have a chance to be seen, according to the Bangor Daily News. High winds might force the event to close even early, organizers told The Associated Press on Thursday.
BARTLETT, N.H. — Attitash Mountain Resort and Wildcat Mountain will be closed to the public for regular operations Sunday, Aug. 28 and Monday, Aug. 29 due to the forecast and the U.S. Forest Service White Mountain National Forest posted closure.
BRYANT POND — The Oxford County Democrats Association barbecue scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 28, has been postponed until Sunday, Sept. 18. It will be held at the 4-H Camp starting at 4:30 p.m.; Congressman Michael Michaud is confirmed to attend.
CAMPTON, N.H. — That’s right. Hurricane Irene has just closed a forest. On Friday, the White Mountain National Forest issued a Forest Closure from 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, through midnight Monday, Aug, 29 due to anticipated weather from Hurricane Irene.
This includes all trails, campgrounds, huts, shelters, and ski areas.
The storm event is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds which will make backcountry travel and camping extremely hazardous due to swollen streams, dangerous crossings, and potential flooding.
Road systems will be vulnerable to wash outs and compromised road shoulders. High winds are predicted that will cause trees and limbs to blow down in campgrounds, along trails systems, and across roads.
Due to the threat of extreme weather, the ability to perform Search and Rescue efforts on Sunday will not be possible.
So make alternative plans this weekend. Listen to the forecast. Take shelter as appropriate and heed the Forest closure.
Making safe and appropriate decisions will not only keep you and your family and friends safe, but also those emergency workers who would be sent to find you Monday.
Please dial 911 to report an emergency. Report any storm damage to the WMNF by calling (603) 536-6100. If there’s a power outage, call (603) 536-3693.
For more information on the White Mountain National Forest, this closure, or questions about refunds for reservations, visit www.fs.fed.us/r9/white or call (603) 536-6100.
FARMINGTON – The End of Summer Hoorah car and motorcycle show planned for Sunday at the Farmington Fairgrounds has been cancelled. The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce’s End of Summer Hoorah events on Saturday, a motorcycle raffle run, battle of the bands and motorcycle burnout, will take place as scheduled.
LEWISTON – The Knights of Columbus Singles Dance at 150 East Ave. scheduled for Sunday night, Aug. 28 has been cancelled.
WAYNE — The Denny Breau Library Benefit Concert scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 28, at Wayne’s Ladd Center has been cancelled. Cary Memorial Library hopes to reschedule the concert at some point in the future.
