NORWAY — On June 3 approximately 100 volunteers spent the day at The Progress Center volunteering their time in celebration of the American Hiking Society’s 19th annual National Trails Day.
This year’s theme, Made With All Natural Ingredients, was evidenced in the work accomplished. A third trail in the Matthew Record Park and Trail system was completed while taking into consideration the lay of the land and the preservation of areas that could support both native plants and wildlife habitation. In addition to trail building, planting and mulching was completed on the existing trails and painting and weeding was completed in the park area.
Those participating in National Trails Day included Terry and Tim Twitchell, Becky Toothaker and Tina Rhuland from Norway Savings Bank, Fred Fifield and Peter Duguay from New Balance, as well as Chris Ivey and the staff and students at Androscoggin Learning and Transition Center.
The Matthew Record Park and Trail, located just off Main Street in Norway, is a little over .2 miles in length. It is easily accessible to those who might be mobility challenged, for families with small children or those who might prefer a natural flat surface on which to walk. Picnic tables, sitting benches, a wheelchair glider and small viewing gardens make this is a quiet place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature while still in very close proximity to downtown Norway. The trail is available to the public on weekends and evenings from dawn to dusk.
