Class A
Mt. Blue won seven games last fall and lost in the Eastern A quarterfinals. The Cougars have a young up-and-coming team that is hoping to take the next step. Mt. Blue has some talent to replace, but the Cougars are ready to build on last season.
Lewiston is hoping to make significant strides this year as well. The Blue Devils won just two games last year, but Coach Butch Dow is hoping this club can challenge for a playoff spot. The Blue Devils return almost the entire roster and has already shown great improvement during the preseason.
Edward Little also missed out on the tourney with five wins last year. The Red Eddies lost a pair of all-state talent in the midfield and on defense but have some skill and quickness up front. EL is hoping to build off last year and challenge for a tourney spot.
Oxford Hills could also make progress this year. The Vikings went 2-10-2 but have a solid group of experienced players back. Coach Cortney Sirois is hoping this team can take some steps forward this fall.
Brunswick, Bangor and Waterville were the top three teams in Eastern A last year and should be vying for the top spots again. Hampden and Mt. Ararat are likely playoff clubs as well.
Class B
Leavitt went further than any Hornet team ever last year with 12 wins and a quarterfinal victory. Leavitt lost a wealth of talent but still have enough experience back to compete for a playoff spot again.
Spruce Mountain could be a team to watch in the Western B field. Jay and Livermore Falls reunite again and have a deep and experienced club that could be a force in the MVC and earn a playoff berth.
Oak Hill was another playoff squad last fall that hopes to build on its eight wins. The Raiders graduated some talent but have some key cogs back to lead the way.
Gray-New Gloucester landed just behind Oak Hill in the eighth seed last year. The Patriots are a young team with a new coach but they can feed of the experience of last year.
Poland just missed the tourney last year but return its top scorers. The Knights have a tough schedule in the Western Maine Conference but hope to earn the key wins that produce a tourney spot.
Mountain Valley won just three games but returns most of that squad. The Falcons will be improved and could be in the chase for the tourney.
Yarmouth, York and Falmouth are three potent WMC teams that should be forces again. Maranacook should be in the playoff hunt as well.
Class C
St. Dom’s got all the way to the Western C final last year and now hope to go a little further. The Saints lost some key veterans but return a nucleus that should make St. Dom’s a team to watch in the MVC and in Western C again.
Dirigo won 10 games last year and could make some noise as well. The Cougars have most of its team back and a strong defense. There’s some experience up front as well. After losing in penalty kicks the last two years, Dirigo may be extra motivated this fall.
Lisbon drops down to Western C after winning 10 games and losing in the Western B quarterfinals. The Greyhounds have a veteran lineup that should make them a viable playoff squad.
Monmouth won seven games and just missed the playoffs. The Mustangs have talent back and could compete for a tourney spot.
Mt. Abram went 2-8-4 but return eight starters. The Roadrunners have a little more seasoning. If they can stay healthy, Mt. Abram will improve upon last year’s effort.
Winthrop won just two games but hope to be improved. The Ramblers have a large group of newcomers that can help boost the program.
Without Georges Valley and Jay, the Western C playoff field has openings for teams. Sacopee Valley should be solid despite its graduation losses. Waynflete and NYA are always factors in tourney time while Hall-Dale could be in the chase after winning eight games and missing the tourney last year.
Class D
Rangeley won eight games and lost in the Western D semfinal. The Lakers lost some veteran players but have the bulk of their squad back. That should keep Rangeley among the top teams in Western D.
Buckfield won just three games but return a number of four-year starters among a veteran club. The Bucks expect to make progress from last year and could be in the tourney mix.
Richmond and Greenville were the top two squads last fall and should be once again. Vinalhaven and Greater Portland Christian could be competive enough to challenge for a tourney spot.
