LISBON FALLS — The Lisbon Historical Society hosted guest speaker, Squire Charles Anthony of Durham, on July 13. Anthony, in the persona of Loyalist William Tyng, provided his audience with an educational evening. His collection of period artifacts added to the event.

The society will host guest speaker Charles W. Plummer of Auburn, who will give a presentation on early educator and inventor, Samuel Read Hall, on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Plummer, well-known for his living history portrayals as Gen. Joshua Chamberlain and other famous historical figures, will portray Hall, founder of the first teacher training school in America and inventor of the blackboard and eraser.

Hall first taught school in Rumford in 1816, where his father was serving as a minister, and it was there that he invented the blackboard.

The meeting will be held at the Ridge School, a restored one-room schoolhouse on Route 9. Attendees are encouraged to wear something from the 1800s.
