100 years ago, 1911
The meeting of the Idyl Wilde association was held Wednesday afternoon at the cottage at Lake Grove. A picnic supper was eaten. The finances of the association were reported to be in a flourishing condition. It was voted to have the brown tail moths exterminated in the vicinity of the property.
50 years ago, 1961
Auburn police were notified late yesterday afternoon that four Twin City taxi cab firms had received calls to go to Taber’s at lake Auburn for a passenger, only to find no one there wanted a cab.
The complaint to police said that the caller sounded like a young girl. The taxicabs made the run to Taber’s in vain.
25 years ago, 1986
A group hoping to increase literacy in Maine plans to take its effort to grocery stores and factories.
Rita LaBarbera, leader of the central and southern Maine Project Literacy U.S. task force, said area businesses can expect to be flooded with information about PLUS in upcoming weeks.
Ms. LaBarbera said the task force wants to initiate tutoring for nonreaders in workplaces. It’s estimated that one in five Maine residents have low reading skills.
