RUMFORD — The he Mountain Valley football team is always looking for improvement, and that was the mindset in the Falcons’ Class B Campbell Conference tilt Friday night.
Matt Hosie rushed for 283 yards on 11 carries, including touchdown runs of 84 and 63, and backfield mate Kyle Duguay added a pair of scores as Mountain Valley exploded for a 47-7 win against Westbrook at Hosmer Field.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Mountain Valley, defending Class B state champions, came out and established control on the first play from the line of scrimmage. Westbrook won the coin toss, deferring to the second half and the ploy backfired. On the first play, Hosie glided through the line and sprinted untouched up the right sideline for the end zone. Izaak Mills kicked his first of five extra points and the rout was on.
“All of our plays were working,” Hosie said. “We came in to this game knowing full well we needed to minimize the mistakes that we had made against Messalonskee and capitalize. We have two all-state guards in Ryan (Glover) and Nate (Nicols).”
Westbrook shook off the stunner and began driving with inside hand-offs to Ryan Label (65 yards, 11 rushes) and impeded Falcon territory. It proved short-lived because quarterback Terry Webber pass was intercepted by Mills, who ran untouched 60 yards up the left sideline. The Blue Blazes went three and out on their next four possessions in the first half.
Westbrook was held to 136 total yards.
Glover said he was more effective running side-to-side, but credits having played middle linebacker last year helps and his coaches have him read keys.
“I was scared coming in to this game,” Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward said. “Westbrook had looked good in beating Spruce Mountain and we had not looked good in a 2-6 loss to Messalonskee. But our kids came to play. I was told this was the best season opener we ever have had. I’m so proud of these kids.”
New quarterback Zach Radcliffe (2 of 7 for 30 yards) threw an 8-yard TD pass to Duguay. Radcliffe had thrown a pass to Jake Theriault for a TD that was called back. Colin Merrill ran in a 1-yard score to give MV a 34-0 lead at halftime.
“We had to stay focused on what we can do,” said Mills, who recovered a fumble. “We concentrated on the fundamentals and if we run our plays correctly I don’t think any (team) in the state can touch us.”
Duguay (71 yards, 19 rushes) scored twice from1-yard out in the third quarter.
Westbrook averted the shutout when reserve QB Ryan Pitas threw a 20-yard TD to James Weatley with 3:51 left to play.
