The opening day of the 106th Maine State Fair in Lewiston certainly was a hot one — in more ways than one. About 7,500 persons attended the festivities, marred by an early morning fire which destroyed a fried clam concession stand by the grandstand.

With the mercury hovering around the 90-degree mark and high humidity, the throng thoroughly enjoyed itself, viewing many fine exhibits, playing the games and rides and watching an eight-race harness horse card at the half-mile oval.

Directors of Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport on Thursday voted to institute landing fees for certain aircraft and agreed to build a set of hangars at the airport.

Manager John L. Carey proposed, and the board agreed, to charge $5 per landing for all cargo planes and other planes over 10,000 pounds gross weight.

“It’s standard for the state (that) lighter aircraft don’t pay a landing fee,” said Carey, who conducted a study of landing fees charged at other airports in the state.
