CANTON — Residents in Canton will be without water due to a water main break on Route 108.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Canton Fire Department was flushing hydrants, the water main broke, Assistant fire Chief Mark Blanchette said.

“The break dumped a large amount of water and now the reservoir is dried up,” Blanchette said.

The eight-inch water main was shut down until repair work can be finished on Wednesday morning. Canton Fire department, made up of town volunteers, including public work employees, were busy during the night due to a mutual aid call for a structure fire in Dixfield.

Blanchette said the break spilled approximately 55 gallons per minute before the main could be shut off.

“I would estimate it will take at least 10 to 12 hours for the reservoir to fill back up to normal levels,” Blanchette said.

Until the reservoir fills, town residents will only be able to get a trickle from their pipes, he said.

The Canton Fire Department was able to use Dixfield’s hydrants to fill their tankers for the evening.
