LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Renovation of the Grand Trunk Depot, one of the Lewiston-Auburn area’s most notable historic sites, is about to begin.

The Lewiston and Auburn mayors and federal and regional officials will be on hand Wednesday for a groundbreaking ceremony in Lewiston.

Known as the “Ellis Island” of Lewiston and Auburn, the Grand Trunk building was erected in 1899 and entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It’s been abandoned for nearly 30 years.

With the renovation, the Grand Trunk Depot will begin a new chapter in its storied history.

The property’s owner, the Lewiston and Auburn Railroad Co., owns the property and has a tenant who will develop it.

Early last century, many French-Canadian immigrants to the area entered through the depot, giving it the Ellis Island tag.
