LEWISTON —A man surrendered peacefully after a standoff with police on Howe Street on Wednesday evening.

Police had converged on the apartment building, where the reportedly armed man was holed up.

Police had the 2½-story building surrounded, and spent more than an hour trying to get the man to come out.

Officers closed off Howe Street and at one point an officer on a loudspeaker appealed for the man to emerge. He did not, and police secured the area and were watching the building.

The man reportedly threatened to shoot people,  and made a threat against police.

After 8 p.m., the man finally came out and surrendered to officers.
