STOW — A New Hampshire man was listed in critical condition Tuesday night at a Portland hospital with injuries suffered in a fiery wreck on Route 113 Monday afternoon.
Philip Latraberse, 50, of Hampton, N.H., was flown to Maine Medical Center for treatment of burns and other injuries, Oxford County Deputy Chris Davis said.
Latraberse was driving from Farmington, where he had been working at the fair last week, to Fryeburg to work at that fair that opens Sunday, the deputy said. He was driving a 1997 Chevrolet one-ton pickup towing a fifth wheel camper trailer.
The truck and trailer descended a steep grade and entered a curve near Brickett Place, went off the road, hit several trees, overturned and caught fire, the deputy said.
“I don’t know how he got out of the truck,” Davis said.
“His speed was likely excessive for the road” and there “could have been mechanical failure as well,” he said.
The crash occurred at about 4:20 p.m. Monday south of Evans Notch in the White Mountain National Forest.
Latraberse was taken by Fryeburg Rescue to a LifeFlight helicopter and flown to Portland.
Assisting at the scene Monday were Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant, Saco Valley Fire Department personnel, White Mountain National Forest rangers and two investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
