PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — Nearly 90 years after she cut a silk ribbon to open the bridge between Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, former Portsmouth Mayor Eileen Foley will lead a “tying-off” ceremony to bid the bridge farewell.
The 88-year-old Memorial Bridge was closed to vehicles in July after it was determined to be unsafe. Foley, who was five years old when she helped open the bridge, will be on hand Saturday for a “Lift-Off” party celebrating the bridge’s history.
The event includes food, music, games, bridge tours and ferry rides. There will be a fireworks show in the evening, followed by an outdoor showing of the movie “Finding Nemo.”
