ORONO — The University of Maine’s top line showed its penchant for scoring goals early and often, and the Black Bears’ special teams came out ahead by four goals Sunday in the team’s lone exhibition contest of the season, a 7-3 victory over the visiting University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds at Alfond Arena.
Junior Joey Diamond netted a pair of goals for the Black Bears, Spencer Abbott scored a shorthanded goal and added a goal and three helpers and captain Brian Flynn scored once and assisted on two more to pace the offense.
Sophomore goaltenders Dan Sullivan and Martin Ouellette shared goaltending duties. Sullivan allowed two goals on 14 shots, while Ouellette stopped 16 of 17 in the second half of the contest.
Brice O’Connor, Adam Shemansky and Pietro Antonelli also scored for Maine, which scored three times on the power play and kick-started the game with a short-handed tally 4:09 into the game.
Maine begins the regular season Friday with a home game against Merrimack at Alfond Arena. The Black Bears host Northeastern on Sunday before a weekend road trip to North Dakota on Oct. 14 and 15.
Lewiston native Mark Anthoine played a regular shift with the team’s second line Sunday, logging one shot on net and playing the net front on the second power play unit. Scarborough’s Jake Rutt, who once played at St. Dom’s, found the scoresheet twice with a pair of minor penalties, but was also a plus-1 and delivered two solid hits in the defensive corners.
