MONMOUTH — Stephany Perkins, 22, has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for Tanzania on Oct. 10 to begin pre-service training as an environment extension Peace Corps volunteer. Upon graduation from volunteer training in January, Perkins will work in environmental education and natural resource management.

After working as an environmental intern in a rural Himalayan village in India, Perkins said she was inspired to continue doing similar sustainability work in other areas of the world.

“I have always loved travel, and it has been those experiences when I was able to integrate into the culture and community that I have enjoyed the most,” she said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to act as a sort of cultural liaison between Tanzania and America.”

During the first three months of her service, Perkins will live with a host family in Tanzania to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Perkins will be sworn into service and be assigned to a community in Tanzania, where she will live and work for two years with the local people.

Perkins is the daughter of Dale and Deborah Perkins and a graduate of Monmouth Academy in Monmouth. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2011 with summa cum laude honors.

After completing her service as a Peace Corps volunteer, Perkins said she hoped to continue her education in sustainable development or resource management.

Perkins joins the 74 Maine residents currently serving in the Peace Corps and more than 1,740 Maine residents who have served in the Peace Corps since 1961.
